How to analyze suspicious email headers in Gmail

Email headers are code used to understand and verify an email message. They provide timestamps, sender domains, and sender IP addresses, which can be used to find out more about the location of the sender and the organization that owns the domain. This information is especially useful in protecting against potential phishing attackers seeking to scam users via email messages. To closely inspect emails that come into your CatholicU inbox, please look at the headers of the email in Gmail or whichever email client you use to view your CatholicU email. If you believe the email is suspicious, please forward the headers with the email to techsupport@cua.edu.

How to analyze an email header in Gmail:

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. Open the email that you want to analyze.
  3. Next to Reply , click More >and then, Show original.
  4. In a new window, the full header shows.
  5. Click Copy to clipboard.
  6. Paste into top of suspicious email and forward to techsupport@cua.edu.
